About ill health retirement

If a member of staff is too ill to carry out the duties of their employment efficiently, they may be able to receive an ill health pension. This pension is not age-related, but the member must:

  • have at least two years of qualifying membership in the scheme
  • satisfy the ill health retirement criteria

Note that the regulations specify what counts as 'qualifying', including certain transfers.

You, the employer, decide to award ill health retirement. You must seek the opinion of an independent registered medical practitioner (IRMP) with certification in occupational medicine. However, the IRMP does not make the decision.
